Marrian-Webster online dictionary defines honorable conduct as that which deserves and calls respect and honor to it. In society today, honor is given to many different types of people. Those who are truthful, honest, and selfless are thought to be honorable people in the eyes of many. However, some believe that anyone whom holds a position of power is, without a doubt, honorable. In recent events this theory has been proven wrong when president Bill Clinton was accused of having sexual relations with a whitehouse intern.

Shortly after midnight on Jan. 21, 1998, washingtonpost.com published a Washington Post article reporting that Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr had expanded his investigation ofPresident Clinton. Starr, The Post reported, was now examining whether Clinton and his close friend Vernon Jordan encouragedMonica Lewinsky, a 24-year-old former White House intern, to lie to lawyers in thePaula Jones sexual harassment case about whether she had an affair with the president.

On Jan. 26, Clinton stated, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky,” and denied that he had urged her to lie about an affair. Over the next seven months, Clinton continued to deny the relationship. His legal defense team tried unsucessfully to derail Starr’s investigation, which instead expanded to include whether Clinton himself lied under oath in his Paula Jones deposition. On Aug. 17, Clinton spent more than four hours testifying to Starr’s grand jury on closed-circuit television from the White House. He denied that he perjured himself in the Paula Jones deposition. That evening, he went on national television and admitted that he had an inappropriate relationship with Lewinsky and had misled the American people about it.

In the days and months following Clinton’s admission of wrongdoing, the American people began to ponder the actions of the President, and their significance. Many saw the presidents actions as im-moral and wrong, asserting that cheating on his wife was disgusting and disloyal.
